Banks Discontinuing Direct Connect for QuickBooks in 2026

Short answer: Direct Connect is not really a bank by bank decision. Intuit is retiring the service itself on October 30, 2026, and new Direct Connect enrollments already closed on April 30, 2026, so most published notices cite that same date. Zions Bancorporation has posted it across all six of its brands. A few institutions, including Bank of America and Eastern Bank, set an earlier date of their own, so your bank's notice always outranks the industry deadline. The catch is in the replacement: banks recommend Express Web Connect, which Intuit does not offer for QuickBooks Desktop. Desktop users keep importing .qbo Web Connect files instead. Last updated July 2026.

Which banks have announced that Direct Connect is being discontinued?

Most notices published so far point at the same October 30, 2026 date, because it is Intuit's date rather than any individual bank's. A bank can go earlier if it wants to, and some have. Zions Bancorporation has posted it across every brand it operates, on both the consumer and the business side. Bank of America and Eastern Bank are the outliers so far: both set their own earlier schedule rather than waiting for the industry deadline. Always take the date from your own bank's notice.

Treat the table as a floor, not a ceiling. Most banks send the notice by secure message or statement insert rather than posting a public page, so the absence of your bank here means nothing. Assume Direct Connect ends for you on October 30, 2026 unless your bank tells you otherwise in writing.

Why are all the banks using the same date?

Because the decision was not theirs. Every notice gives the same reason, in almost identical wording: Intuit, which provides connectivity services for QuickBooks and Quicken, is retiring its desktop products. Direct Connect is an Intuit service the bank pays to participate in, so when Intuit ends it, every participating institution loses it on the same day regardless of size or region.

What exactly do the bank notices say?

The Zions brands all publish the same two sentences. The first is the date: Direct Connect for Business will be discontinued on October 30, 2026. The second is the reason: Intuit, which provides connectivity services for QuickBooks and Quicken, is retiring its desktop products. They then list two replacements, Express Web Connect labeled as recommended, and Web Connect described as a manual download.

Will Express Web Connect work with QuickBooks Desktop?

No, and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in the whole transition. Read the bank's own fine print rather than the bold recommendation. The Zions notices state that Express Web Connect works with Quicken and QuickBooks Online, while Web Connect works with Quicken, QuickBooks Desktop and QuickBooks Online. Intuit's connectivity documentation for financial institutions lists the same split. If you run QuickBooks Desktop, the recommended option is not available to you.

So a Desktop user who does exactly what the notice recommends goes looking for an option that does not exist in their product, calls support, and loses a week. The honest reading of every one of these notices, for a Desktop user, is that Web Connect is the only supported replacement.

What is the difference between Direct Connect and Web Connect?

Direct Connect is a two way link: QuickBooks talks to the bank, pulls transactions, and can push instructions back, which is why bill pay and transfers work through it. Web Connect is one way and manual: you sign in to online banking, download a .qbo file, and import it. Web Connect needs no banking credentials inside QuickBooks, and it is not affected by the October 2026 retirement.

What happens to bill pay when Direct Connect ends?

Bill pay and transfers initiated from inside your accounting software stop, because Direct Connect is the only two way connectivity type. Payments already scheduled at the bank, including future dated and recurring ones, continue to process, since they live at the bank rather than in the software. Anything new has to be set up in the bank's own website or mobile app from that point on.

For businesses that ran vendor payments out of QuickBooks Desktop this is the part worth planning early. It is a workflow change, not a file format change, and it usually means moving approvals and payment runs somewhere else. The same is true of month end: if your close depended on a live feed, rebuild it around a file you download and reconcile on a schedule, or move the matching into dedicated account reconciliation software that does not care where the transactions came from.

Is Direct Connect worth keeping until October 2026?

Only if you are already enrolled, since new enrollments closed in April 2026. If you are enrolled and paying a monthly fee for it, check what the fee covers before you cancel early. The Zions brands note that the Direct Connect monthly fee includes the optional bill pay service with unlimited payments, so cancelling early can cost you the payment channel months before you have to lose it.

My bank does not offer a .qbo download. What then?

This is common at smaller banks and at most credit unions, and it is not a dead end. Nearly every online banking platform exports CSV or Excel, even when it has no QuickBooks option. Download that file, convert it to a .qbo Web Connect file, and import it exactly as you would a file the bank produced itself. QuickBooks reads the resulting file the same way, because the format is the same.

The reason this step is necessary at all is that QuickBooks Desktop cannot import a bank CSV in any version or year, including Pro, Premier and Enterprise. Its only banking import path is a .qbo file loaded through Banking, then Bank Feeds, then Import Web Connect File. Our guide to converting CSV to QBO walks through the whole sequence, and the Direct Connect alternative page covers the migration end to end.

Does this affect QuickBooks Online?

Not directly. QuickBooks Online never used Direct Connect, so nothing in your existing setup breaks on October 30, 2026. Online keeps its automatic bank feeds and still accepts manual .qbo, .qfx and .ofx uploads, capped at 350 KB and 1,000 rows per file. If you are moving off Desktop because of this deadline, that upload path is how you get your history across.

How do I know if I am actually using Direct Connect?

In QuickBooks Desktop, open Banking, then Bank Feeds, then Bank Feeds Center. If the account refreshes transactions after you enter a bank customer ID and PIN inside QuickBooks, that is Direct Connect. If you have to sign in to your bank's website, download a file, and then import it, you are already on Web Connect and the October 2026 date does not change your workflow at all.

What should I do before October 30, 2026?

Three things, and none of them need to wait. First, confirm which accounts still run on Direct Connect and which have already been moved. Second, download a full history export now, while the connection still works, so you are not rebuilding a backfill from ninety day feeds later. Third, run one practice import of a converted file into a test period so the routine is familiar before the deadline forces it.

That second point is the one people skip. Bank feeds pull roughly ninety days on a first connect, and some banks hold only twelve to eighteen months of downloadable history. File imports have no date limit, so anything you export before the cutoff can go into QuickBooks later, at any time, as a single file. Our guide to importing older transactions into QuickBooks covers how to load a multi year pull without tripping the duplicate detection.

Will my bank charge me to switch?

Switching away from Direct Connect normally removes a fee rather than adding one, because Direct Connect is the connection type banks most often bill for. Web Connect downloads are typically included with online banking at no extra cost. Confirm it against your bank's schedule of fees, since a Direct Connect fee may be bundled with bill pay that you still want.

Is this the end of QuickBooks Desktop?

Not immediately, but the direction is clear. Intuit stopped selling new Pro Plus, Premier Plus and Mac Plus subscriptions in September 2024, the 2024 release is the final non Enterprise version and is supported to September 30, 2027, and Enterprise remains on sale with no published end date. A retired version still opens and still imports Web Connect files. What ends is the Intuit hosted service layer, which is exactly what Direct Connect was.

If you are weighing the move, the practical comparison is in our guide to QuickBooks Online versus Desktop CSV import, and the deadline detail lives on the Direct Connect migration page.
