M&T Bank CSV to QuickBooks: Convert M&T Transactions to QBO
No account needed for your first 3 conversions. We never store your bank login.
Short answer: M&T Bank connects to QuickBooks through M&T Direct Connect, a paid service at $9.95 a month. If you don't want the subscription, or the connection keeps failing, export your recent M&T activity as a spreadsheet file, convert that CSV to a QuickBooks Web Connect (.qbo) file with the converter above, and upload it. The .qbo route works in both QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop, and it's the only file route Desktop accepts for bank transactions.
M&T is the main operating bank for a lot of small businesses in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New England, and its QuickBooks link is one of the few at a large US bank that still carries a monthly fee. That fee, plus a connection that tends to drop with errors 102, 103 and 105, is why most people land on this page. The table below lays out the three ways to get M&T transactions into QuickBooks and what each one costs.
| Route | What it costs | History it reaches | Works in | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M&T Direct Connect | $9.95 a month, billed by M&T | Activity from the day you connect | QuickBooks Desktop and Quicken | One account, ongoing bookkeeping, when the connection is stable |
| M&T spreadsheet export converted to .qbo | Converter subscription, trial conversions before you pay | Recent history, as far back as M&T's export allows | QuickBooks Online and Desktop | Skipping the monthly fee, fixing gaps, Desktop users, bookkeepers with several banks |
| PDF statements converted to .qbo | Statement converter pricing | Up to seven years of M&T e-statements | QuickBooks Online and Desktop | Prior years, closed accounts, catch-up work |
Does M&T Bank work with QuickBooks?
Yes, through M&T Direct Connect, which downloads transactions from M&T Online Banking into QuickBooks or Quicken using your M&T user ID and password. M&T lists it at $9.95 a month. QuickBooks Online users can also try the standard bank feed, but when either connection fails, a file import is the fallback that always works.
The file import is also the only route that does not depend on the connection being up on the day you close the month. A CSV you exported yourself doesn't expire, doesn't need a re-authorization, and doesn't care which QuickBooks server is having a bad week.
How much does M&T Direct Connect cost?
M&T charges $9.95 a month for Direct Connect, which works out to $119.40 a year per enrollment. For a single operating account that you reconcile every month and that stays connected, that's a fair price, and we'd tell you to keep paying it. The math changes in three situations: the connection keeps breaking and you're paying for a service you end up working around; you only need a one-time cleanup or a prior-year catch-up, so a subscription makes no sense; or you're a bookkeeper with clients at M&T and several other banks, where one converter that reads any bank's CSV replaces a pile of separate bank-side fees.
Can I download M&T transactions to Excel or CSV?
Yes, for recent history on eligible accounts. M&T's Digital Services Agreement says you may export account information for use with personal finance software such as Quicken or with spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel, for recent transaction history, and that the feature is limited to certain eligible accounts. Look for the download or export option on the account's transaction history in M&T Online Banking and choose the spreadsheet format.
M&T also notes that it can change the available download formats without notice, so if you only see a Quicken option on your account, the monthly PDF statements under your e-statements are the fallback. M&T keeps up to seven years of statements online, which is deeper than any export window.
How do I convert an M&T Bank CSV to QBO?
- Export the activity from M&T Online Banking in the spreadsheet format, one account and one date range at a time. Don't open and re-save it in Excel first if you can avoid it, because Excel can quietly reformat dates.
- Upload the file to the converter at the top of this page. It accepts .csv, .txt and Excel files (.xls, .xlsx).
- Confirm the columns. The converter detects the date, description and amount columns, or separate debit and credit columns, and normalizes the dates to the format QuickBooks expects.
- Check the preview. The result screen shows how many transactions were parsed and previews the rows. Compare the count and a couple of amounts against M&T's online activity before you import.
- Download the .qbo and import it into QuickBooks using the steps below.
A normal month for one account converts in under a minute. The full walkthrough, including the column layouts that trip people up, is in the how to convert CSV to QBO guide.
How do I import M&T transactions into QuickBooks Online?
Go to Bank transactions (under Transactions in the older menu, or All apps, then Accounting, in the newer one), open the Link account dropdown, choose Upload from file, and select the .qbo. Pick the QuickBooks account the transactions belong to, and they land in the For review tab to categorize and match like any bank feed transaction.
QuickBooks Online caps each upload at 350 KB and 1,000 transactions, whether the file is a CSV or a .qbo. A busy M&T operating account can pass 1,000 lines in a quarter, so export by month when you're close to the limit; the QuickBooks CSV import limit post covers how to split a large file. Online will also take the raw CSV directly, but then you map the columns by hand on every upload, and a CSV carries no transaction IDs, so an overlapping date range duplicates rows instead of skipping them. The CSV to QuickBooks Online converter page compares the two uploads side by side.
How do I import M&T transactions into QuickBooks Desktop?
Convert the M&T export to .qbo, then in QuickBooks Desktop go to File, Utilities, Import, Web Connect Files, select the file, and point it at your existing M&T account in QuickBooks. The transactions appear in the Bank Feeds center, where you add or match them to the register.
This is the part people miss: QuickBooks Desktop cannot import a bank CSV in any version. The Import Excel and CSV Toolkit handles customers, vendors, items and the chart of accounts, not bank transactions. So for a Desktop user without Direct Connect, a converted .qbo isn't a shortcut, it's the only file path in. If Desktop is your setup, the CSV to QuickBooks Desktop converter page has the Desktop-specific details, including how to avoid linking a file to the wrong account.
Why does QuickBooks say it can't connect to M&T Bank?
The three codes M&T users report most are 102, 103 and 105. Errors 102 and 105 mean the connection to the bank is unavailable, usually on the bank or aggregator side, and they tend to clear on their own within a few days. Error 103 means the sign-in was rejected, so check your M&T credentials in online banking first, then update them in QuickBooks.
While you wait, the books don't have to. Export the missing date range from M&T, convert it, and import it. Because a .qbo carries a unique ID for every transaction, QuickBooks skips any rows it has already seen once the feed comes back, which a CSV upload can't do. If the feed has been down for weeks rather than days, the QuickBooks bank feed not working page walks through the file-based fix in detail.
What happens to M&T Direct Connect after October 2026?
Direct Connect is being retired across the industry, with October 30, 2026 as the widely published end date and new enrollments already closed since April 30, 2026. Your bank's own notice outranks the industry date, so watch for M&T's message about its own timing. When Direct Connect ends, QuickBooks Desktop users are left with Web Connect files, which means a .qbo import is the way M&T data keeps reaching Desktop. The Direct Connect alternative page covers the switch, and the Direct Connect vs Web Connect comparison explains what changes day to day.
Is converting cheaper than paying for Direct Connect?
For one M&T account that stays connected, no, and it would be misleading to say otherwise. Direct Connect is $119.40 a year. Our Starter plan is $49 a month, or $24.50 a month billed yearly ($294 charged up front), and it covers 100 conversions a month from any bank, not just M&T. Converting wins when the connection is unreliable, when you're on Desktop after Direct Connect ends, when you need a cleanup rather than a subscription, or when you import for several clients across several banks. Current plans are on the pricing page.
Need years that the export window no longer reaches? Those live in M&T's PDF statements, and a bank statement to QuickBooks converter is the tool for that part of the job, while this one handles the CSV and Excel exports.
Convert your M&T export now
Upload an M&T CSV or Excel export at the top of this page. The first three conversions need no account and no card, so you can check the parsed rows against your M&T activity and import a real .qbo into QuickBooks before you decide on a plan.
